Three or so years ago I bought my first camera: The Canon Powershot SD750 Digital Elph. I loved it, took it everywhere and captured some great moments and shots. As I learned more about photography I got more and more interested and was soon investigating (and saving for) DSLRs. I wanted more creative control and, quite frankly, thought an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera would improve my level of photography.
In July 2010, after years of prayer, saving and research, I selected the Canon T1i. The transition was seamless, since I was already used to the menus. Learning how to use everything and employ certain techniques is ongoing, but I had a great jumpstart.
Much of my beginning understanding I owe to James Beltz. His photography 101 class helped me get used to the settings and learn the basics of shooting. Check out his business here, and his tips website here.
More recently I have attended workshops at the Institute of Photographic Studies. I loved every minute of my instruction there. They are a Christian organization and travel all over the world. I flew to Portland, OR for their workshops but I know they are offered in CO, MN, and GA as well. I highly recommend them.
