Lime Summer dress progress

I've finished the bodice of my lime green dress!  But I'm having a little more trouble than I though I would.
You see, I ordered this lime organdy from Fabric.com (for $1.95 a yard!) and when I got it I saw that it was really sheer and stiff.  That is what I get for ordering a fabric I've never used online. :-)  So I decided to line it in 5mm Silk Habotai. Boy, oh boy.  I had no idea what I was getting into. :-)  I've never used 100% silk (Dharma Trading Co. btw.) before.  5mm silk is super thin.  The silk is so sheer it hardly helps! (picture on right)  So even after every piece is interlined in silk I'm still going to have to wear some sort of dress slip.  I don't like slips. :-( Oh well, I still am excited about the dress.

I am making view A without the ribbon.

BTW.  Silk is a pain.

:-)

  1. Thank you for your sweet comment on my dress!
Wow. You've chosen some tricky fabric here, silk organza is most often used as an underlining fabric itself, and rarely as a stand alone fashion fabric, with the exception of sheer overlays on eveningwear (overlaying a satin dress under, say)
My suggestion would be to make your dress up in the silk organza, and make the lining for underneath out of a more opaque fabric than Habotai, such a silk charmeuse or satin.
Good luck! This a very pretty colour, and will make a stunning dress!

  2. Thank you for the advice! It is a little late to remake the dress, but I will certainly do that next time!

Is organza the same thing as organdy? I have some organza, but it isn't the same as this organdy stuff I just got. Maybe it is the same weave? But different fibers? This is what I'm trying to learn about. :-)

  3. Ooh, silk does sound like a definite pain. :/ Looks like it's going to be a very cute dress though!
