Calm before the storm.  I think I should add it to my second shooter resume that I bring comics to read after the rehearsal and make the first shooter laugh. :)  Awkward Yeti/Heart & Brain is the bestest.

Tonight was yet another example of "I'm working, I can't take personal photos," until I remembered this was a thing and finally got it out.  Also, photographers aren't in near enough photos.  I love to catch them behind the scenes like they do so well for everyone else. :)

Good old fashioned fun.  And good old fashioned lessons in how to speak nicely to one another.  How to share.  How to be patient.  How to work together.

This particular lego project started as mine, but when someone asked if they could "help" the answer was always yes.  Soon we're all squeezed into one small space trying to recreate a garden and fountain out of legos.  And we're expressing our emotions rather loudly...apparently.  I love how all the bright colors all over the place are like the emotions that children wear on their sleeves.  But somehow we're learning to sort them out and be choosing to be content with our blues or looking at someone else's perspective before being jealous and taking what they have.  We're bringing every thought and emotion captive to Christ and living well -- as he designed us to.

In which my boyfriend helps my little sister cream me in Jaipur.  And Timothy is normal.  :)

I had some stressful moments today.  I had some sad moments today.  I also had some amazingly right moments today.  It's important to acknowledge and grow from struggles, but (since I struggle with being a pessimist) I must choose to curate my memories toward those where the glass is half-full, not those where it's half-empty.  When you shoot, you are telling the story and creating the memory.  Shoot even the sad things in a way that brings hope and beauty

Sundays are rough for taking pictures.  They are "be" days, not "document" days.

So I went out and took some obligatory pictures.

Of flowers.

They were cool, but they didn't hit home (actually they were kinda lame).  They didn't tell a story.

So I brought the camera out at Bible Study (where Kevin and Celia were in town for just the day).

We took a group photo, and then it clicked that all three of my original pseudo-bros were now married (as of 2 months ago) and were all there with their wives!  So we took a group photo.

I was worried about being the annoying girl with the camera.

I didn't want to push things.  But I shot anyway.  Because, you know, the challenge, and, like, failing 3 days in, and wanting to push myself...   So I directed them and then relied on the group of other Bible study fan behind me to provide comic relief.  And I just shot everything.

Now we have amazing snapshots of Danny's sense of humor, and Christen's baby belly, and Celia's laugh, and Kevin's beard. . .This bit of time will never come back again.  It's a different season from when the guys were all around our table eating one-pot and talking theology, and another different season is on the way.  But this here and now is the gift of the present.

It totally beat the flower shot.

SOK Concert and Kopp's

Last weekend my best friend and I met my family in Milwaukee for a Sons of Korah concert.  Sons of Korah is (a highly underrated) Australian music group that is working on the Psalms Project.  They have 10 CDs out so far.

Their sound takes a little getting-used-to at first for some, but their interpretations of the Psalms are brilliant.  Psalm 94 from their recent album is an angry song, but it perfectly portrays the depth and emotion of the psalmist.  The commentary in-between the songs was wonderful and worshipful.

The humor, brought mostly by the far left and right musicians was also refreshing amidst the serious and sincere moments.  Overall, a wonderful concert.  An added plus was accidentally sitting two rows behind some friends from various parts of WI.  We all headed to Kopp's for custard afterward to round out the evening of fellowship.

It's supposed to be the BEST custard.  I'm not a connoisseur, so I'll take their word for it.

 Parents and friend's from WI.

Sharing is caring.  Especially when a coffee flavor is involved.

What a stud.

Shannen ❘ Spring is Here!

This is Shannen!  We had a couple minutes to spare before Bible Study started one Sunday evening, so I dragged her she came outside with me to take advantage of the gorgeous spring light.

This was the first day this year it was warm enough to go outside with a t-shirt.  It ended up snowing for the rest of the week and remained quite cool up until this past weekend.  Welcome Spring!

The light was so incredible.  I can't keep it in a bottle, but I can look back at these pictures and see this face and be reminded. :-)  Shannen, your laughter is beautiful.

Check out this post to see the original sketch, design plans, and supply list...

Well, we pulled it together!  And it was even better than I imagined!  +Carolyn Atherley and I worked together on it and I think she learned a lot!  I look forward to our future projects. :-)

Winter Retreat +

How did I start the new year? A wonderful week of Bible study with about 25 other Christians! A.K.A. Winter Retreat + at Story Book Lodge Christian Camp.

Story Book Lodge is a ministry that hosts bible retreats and bible-centered youth camps in Northern Minnesota.  All of the cabins are unique to a particular fairy-tale or tale found in your typical story book, hence the name.  But  this camp makes a ministry of telling the greatest (true) story of all time to hundreds of kids, families, and teens every year: the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Many people in our church are/were heavily involved in counseling youth camps and going to family camp so we heard about it when we moved here to Rockford 11 years ago.  We went to family camp one year later and for various reasons and schedule conflicts, haven't gone since.

My Mom thinks I need to get out more and actually interact with humans more than school books, so she suggested that I go.  Then some friends from our chapel invited me to ride with them.  Things added up and before I knew it I was studying the prison epistles and starting to pack my bags!
The girls from Rockford: Carolyn, Casey, Moi, Natalie, Carolyn

Bright and early January 1 we hopped in the car and dove into 3 days of intense Bible study.  There weren't very many people there, but I guess I'm just used to conferences with loads of people I couldn't possible hope to meet.  Here, it was more like family, and they were.  They were my brothers and sisters in Christ and everyone was there for the same reason.  To study the Bible and grow spiritually!
That is rare.  Everyone was encouraged to participate in the study (most did).

The difference in this weekend and your typical "retreat" though wasn't what happened during the study (even though that was amazing and I actually learned way more than I usually do at conferences) it was the attitude of the people when the study ended.

It wasn't, "put away your Bible and let's talk about stuff that is going of for real."  THIS was real.  The Bible is alive and relevant!  It is changing us!  No matter what games we played (there were quite a few) or meals were eaten the focus was still the same.  God and his work.  I was able to bring up things that the Lord had been teaching me and discuss them with people...who actually wanted to listen!

It was unbelievable.  The talks I had, the people I connected with.  Wow.  It was so edifying.  I can't explain it any other way.  The atmosphere was contagious with joyfullness (and illness, actually.  Our numbers were cut at least in half by the last session.  No, they didn't die, silly.  They kept to their rooms.)

Carl
Dominoes.  I learned how to play Mexican Train.  Fun stuff. :-)  Except the 4 year old beat me I think.

Chess
Said 4 year old and his Dad. ;-)  What can I say, he is really smart.

Puzzles.

I loved the relatively small group of people.  I had the chance to learn everyone's name and hometown, if not actually sit down and talk with them for a while.

oh wait...

Broomball.
My bad. Literally.  You should have seen my knees!  Molted purple spots each of them, 5 inches across.  And my rear-end.  It hurt to walk and sit for at least a week after camp.  Oh, and by the way?  SO worth it. :-)

Rook. (And the newlyweds. :-)

Dancing.
I can't seem to go anywhere without teaching someone how to swing or waltz.   This time it happened 20 minutes before we went home!

Cooking.

Grace - Do you know Grace?  I was astonished to finally meet her and find out that she only lives a state away!  I "know" her, and her sister Sarah from their Bright Lights ministry and Sarah's book Before you Meet Prince Charming.  I've been following Grace's blog for a while now.  I couldn't believe that she was there.  We had some really great talks and I might get to see her again this summer!  I love it when that happens. :-)
Reading.

Grace and Ben. :-)

Hugging. ish?  and Photobombing.
Love you guys.

Hymn-singing.
This felt like a little piece of heaven.  I couldn't stop smiling while I was singing, and that isn't so great for tonal quality.  It was one of those moments.  Somebody said "Sick or not, I'm singing!"

Sleeping.
We got there just before dinner on the night of the first session and people were still there from the week before so there weren't any beds available.  Uncle Bill opened up another cabin just for us Rockford girls.  It was a blast.  After scheduled time was well over you could find us all bonding and talking and on occasion swing/waltz/or salsa dancing in our cabin.

Smiling.  It was so nice to spend time with this sweet girl.  I've known her for almost a decade, but we have lived hours apart and never really connected till we started meeting at Bible studies.

Peeking.
Ben apparently had a super lousy hand, so he had to show everyone who wasn't playing.

And two pictures that don't fit anywhere else.

Moi - Casey - Carolyn
Hey look!  I actually was there! (on that bitterly cold wind-swept expanse of ice) Don't worry, we only took out hats off for the picture. :-)

And there you have it!  A small sampling of the week. :-)  Next up some actual takeaways from the Bible study portion. :-)  They may be spread out throughout the year though.
