Carolyn's Black Satin Formal

Check out this post to see the original sketch, design plans, and supply list...

Well, we pulled it together!  And it was even better than I imagined!  +Carolyn Atherley and I worked together on it and I think she learned a lot!  I look forward to our future projects. :-)

Patterns used: Simplicity 2398 and Simplicity 4070

Emily's Purple Holiday Gown

*accessorized with a black bolero and aviators. ;-)
Pattern: Butterick 4967
Supplies:  All scrap fabrics!  There is some chiffon, satin, knit, jersey, taffeta, some rayon stuff, and some cotton weave for the lining part.

Some of the fabrics are from projects I haven't blogged yet, like the Arabella, but others are from projects I made for other people or scraps picked up along the way.  The taffeta was from this masquerade gown a couple years ago, remember?  The piece that I couldn't quite squeeze out of my scraps was the dark purple knit in the middle.  That is from a length of cloth that I'll be making a dress out of in the somewhat near future. We'll see how busy school is. :-)
I love this style on, well, everybody, but especially little girls.  The problem is, Emily is 8 already.  She is very tall.  And this pattern I have is only sized to size 6... I really wanted to make it though and loved the idea of using scraps, so I did some math and lengthened each tier accordingly.  It was all very helter-skelter, but I'm so happy with the way it turned out.

Design Details - Carolyn's Black Satin Formal

Modified Simplicity 4070 for the bodice and a modified Simplicity 2398 for the skirt.

As you can see there is a lace overlay on the bodice but no lace on the skirt.  The sash and button accents on the back are going to be cream.  The cream ribbon sash will probably also be embellished in the center from with beads/sequins/feathers.  She loves sparkles.

The dress is floor length and has a natural waist line, which is the modifying we will be doing on the skirt.  The lace overlay on the back of the bodice has a zipper until the satin ends and then the lace will connect with snaps.  These snaps will be covered with creamy decorative buttons.  The only modification that will be done on the bodice is to add fabric at the shoulders to give more of a cap sleeve look. :-)

I can't wait to see this when it is finished.  I'm teaching Carolyn the basics of sewing through the experience.  For this reason we are skipping the boning in the bodice. :-)  Now for a shopping success story.  You know how fabric is expensive?  Yeah, and buttons?  Well, with my nifty 50% off coupons and sales we got all the fabric, buttons (like 12), ribbon, zipper and thread for $30.  What a steal.

Edit: We just had our second get together and the bodice is almost done!  Stay tuned for pictures...

Premiere Projects - Index

More people from this area were in our latest movie or are associated (think BlimeyCow associated ;-) with people who were, so us girls decided to make our formal gowns for the premiere together.

Don't know what a premiere is?  Check out the E Pluribus Unum Premiere.

After we decided that, we undecided it.  The one other seamstress is crazy busy and the other two don't know how to sew.  So, I'm doing most of it.  Here is what you're going to be seeing for the next month...

  1. Design posts about my dress - navy satin and navy lace

2. Arabella - eggplant satin and eggplant chiffon (maybe some beading?)

3. Carolyn's sewing progress - forest christmas dress to learn techniques

4. Design work - black satin and black lace with a cream satin embellished sash (and sewing progress when it gets started)

5. Post on my "mock up" dress in prep for this whole endeavor. :-)

Images are very loose representations of the actual piece from google. :-)

E Pluribus Unum Premiere

You saw the trailer for our latest film, Time, Space and the Lint Between here, but you may not realize it that this is the second film that Webber Entertainment Group has collaborated with Morell Cinematic Studios on.  Our last one, E Pluribus Unum, came out almost exactly 1 year ago.

When it came out we started a tradition of sorts.  We had a movie "premiere" where everyone dresses up Hollywood style and walked the red carpet to see it for the first time all together.  It was a blast.  So of course, we're doing it again. :-)  The film is currently in postproduction and is on schedule to come out in early 2013.

Since I never posted any pictures from the last premiere I will do so now to give you a little taste of what I'm talking about.

I know these look small, but you can click on any of them to make them bigger.

So, everyone got their picture taken on the red carpet under the marquee.  Don't they all look great?  These are some of my favorite people.

I wasn't just the people that looked good though, the house was dressed to the nines and the food looked and tasted unbelievable.

Just ask Josiah.  He knows. :-P

Hudson looking studly.

Musn't forget to mention all of the awesome people who worked like crazy to set this up, and then stay and help clean up!

After "dinner" we watched the movie.  And laughed hysterically. ;-)

There was a great deal of talking and some swing dancing thrown in there.

Pictures were taken...

 And posed...

And then these two great gentlemen MC'd the first annual Champignon Awards.  Because, you see, that is a word that looks like "Champion" but in reality means "Mushroom" in french, and a Morel is a mushroom, and we were at the Morell's house...Get it?  Yeah, I though it was wickedly clever too. :-)

Our beloved Director and Editor-in-Chief.  She got the final and most prestigious award and then made a sweet speech to close the night.

But wait!  You can't leave until you get all of the actors' and actresses' signatures!  Everyone got a souvenir poster as a keepsake and everyone signed the massive original as well.  That is what Emily is doing above.

And why, you may ask, am I telling you all this?  For that you must stay tuned for a future post... :-)
